The MCA requires Uk Red Ensign Group flagged vessels operating or intending to operate for commercial use or charter (skippered or bareboat) to comply with the Small Commercial Vessel Code (MGN 280).

This is known as MCA Coding and must be carried out by an authorized surveyor on behalf of a Certifying Authority.

It is a requirement for MCA Coding compliance that vessels are subject to an initial Out-of-Water and In-water survey before the certificate is issued, including;

  • A hull, machinery, systems, and electrical inspection.

  • Stability assessment.

  • Fire safety assessment.

  • Verification of lifesaving equipment.

  • Safety & medical equipment inspection.

Jamil Vanterpool is authorized by the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) Certifying Authority to conduct these surveys. We also inspect for Maritime Labor Convention, 2006 Small Vessel Inspection compliance.

Once the vessel is found to comply with the code, a five-year certificate is issued subject to annual renewals and additional surveys depending on the nature of the boat’s operations.

We are here to help, so if you are preparing your vessel to meet the MGN 280 Code for the first time, renewing your compliance, or transferring your existing coded vessel to the IIMS, contact us for professional MCA Coding guidance and services.
